Not Sure On This One...

Thursday, April 23, 2009

I am not sure on how I think about this item of news.

On the one hand, I can thoroughly understand the rational behind the proposed ban, but on the other hand, as an adherent to freedom of speech, this goes against my core principles as a conservative. As much as I despise Communism, Nazism, Fascism, Socialism, and other nefarious forms of totalitarian government and ideology, I do not believe it should be left up to the State to decide whether an image should be deemed offensive or not.

Your thoughts?

Is Poland correct regarding the proposed ban on Che images?
No. Freedom of speech should trump ideology.
Yes. Poland should ban him.
Not sure.

If it was this country, no ban. As much as I want to beat the shit out of anybody with commie stuff on, it's freedom of speech and expression.

This being in a country that was devastated, defiled and almost destroyed by communism, I don't blame them if they want to hang communists in public.

I have to agree with Mr. Ray. Nazi symbolism is (supposedly) banned in Germany for the same reason. I someone in our country wants to advertise that they're an asshole by wearing a Che shirt, or an Obama button, more power to them. I'll protect their rights as well as mine, when the time comes, besides they'll be easier to target as to what side they're on by wearing things like that...

Good points, all.

I'm with Gregor on this; if people who want to advertise their idiocy and glorify some thug, that is their problem.

One evening in downtown Fort Worth at the movies I encountered a college-looking kid walking around trying real hard to make sure everyone saw his red tee shirt with yellow hammer and sickle.

I told him that I REALLY didn't like his shirt and, "I used to could shoot guys wearing that, but those Viet Namese were way better men than he." I guess I'm big enough he kept his pie-hole secured.

Gregor,"Billy Ray" my given name - I just don't post my last name in public. You can call me Ray, or you can call me Billy, or you can call me Billy Ray, but ya doesn't hasta call me Mr. Ray.

Billy Ray...Semper Fi!

I was a 'Doc'

1st Battalion, 5th Marines

Weapons Company
81mm Mortar Platoon

Well, Semper Fi right back at ya, Doc Goth!

I was a Crew Chief for HMM362 Ugly Angels first at Marble Mt., then flying off the USS Okinawa, then out of Phu Bai from 68-69.

We did a lot of Medevacs so our Docs were honored members of the squadron. A live Marine is better than a million Air Medals.

Doc Rainey was with the unit before I got there. He's helping me get signed up with the VA to get my masters in social work to counsel veterans. Got layed off last month. Still helping us Marines all this time!

I just started a blog at http://leestreetinutopia.blogspot.com/ Drop in sometime. Do you know of popasmoke.com ?

How about "Chief" Billy Ray?

I am so envious of you guys that were eligible for military service. I tried every branch, but was declared unfit, because of a birth defect. Never dampened my spirits, though.

Gregor,

The fact that you tried joining holds a lot with me, and I respect you for that.
